Janet has lived at Plymouth West since 2008. She is originally from Minnesota. She worked as a caregiver for seniors for ten years before retiring when she turned 66.
“I have met some very nice people since moving into Plymouth West. The location here is close to grocery stores and the bus line. I feel safe because we are close to the police and fire departments.”
She has been volunteering at Plymouth West since April 2012. She spends 25 hours/month assisting with the Monday morning coffees, Friday movies, and delivering notices and monthly newsletters in the building. “Volunteering has enabled me to meet new residents and tell them about the activities in the building. We have so much going on in the building. We have the monthly Resident Forum and the birthday party. We have coffee on Mondays, game days on Tuesdays, bingo on Wednesdays, and Wii bowling on Saturdays. I have lost weight since I started volunteering because I do so much walking. I notice so much more while I am walking the building. If I see things that need to be repaired I let the office know.”
To keep her mind sharp and alert she does daily word search puzzles. She has been doing these puzzles for thirteen years. She also enjoys cooking and bowling. She sometimes bakes treats to share at the Monday morning coffees and was a member of the 2011 Plymouth West Senior Swingers Wii bowling team. The team placed third in the LOMCO Wii bowling tournament and Janet shared that she “enjoyed competing with residents from other buildings.”
